Keep the Change

Our world moves fast like a freeway,

and we’re all strapped into a car.

No brakes, no guardrails, none coming to save us.

Looks like we’re stuck where we are.

It’s dizzying, maddening, crazy.

My worries are all that I hear.

The miles are endless, the road never stops,

and the horizon is full of fear.

But on this road we’ve stayed, somehow,

despite the despair and commotion.

I lift my head and look out the windshield.

Away goes my sickness of motion.

Looking behind us I realize,

that this car could never brake.

We could check out and just cry in our hands,

but the future will be what we make.

The car, it will stop for nothing,

for Change is the name she was given.

No choice, I suppose, but to grab the wheel,

and see to it that she’s driven.

“All that you touch, you change. All that you change changes you.

The only lasting truth is Change. God is Change.”

Octavia Butler
